Chapter Nineteen

This was far from how Ben pictured leaving this place behind, but he didn’t care at the moment; he was too thankful for the fact that Joel hadn’t been seriously hurt. He also wanted to be the one doing the shooting, but that wasn’t possible, either. Joel was too disoriented for the challenge of navigating what lay ahead of them. It was going to be a fight to the finish, apparently. No surprise, really. That was just how their morning was going.

Ben was careful to give Ed a good lead on them. There was enough to worry about without having to concern themselves with running into each other. Besides, that was the plan anyway. Ed had the medicine. Ben had entrusted him with the precious cargo because when it came right down to it, Ed was the better bet on getting it home. It was hard to get Ed to agree to leave him and Joel behind on purpose and head straight to the house. But the logic was too sound for him to argue. Emma needed the medicine, and they couldn’t risk the Hooligans finding out where Ed and Julia’s house was.

Ed knew the trails near the house like the back of his hand. Ben’s knowledge of the area was limited to what he’d seen of it yesterday when he and the boys were playing around. There were offshoots of the main trail that neither he nor Joel had the chance to explore during their short excursion through Ed’s property. Therefore, Ed stood the best chance of losing any Hooligans that managed to chase them that far.

But Ben wasn’t planning on letting any of the Hooligans make it that far, and he intended on playing bait to facilitate that plan. They also had the ability to shoot back more efficiently. Ed would have to drive and return fire. If Max had thumbs, Ben was pretty sure Ed would have trained him how to shoot, but the fact was, Ed was alone when it came to defending himself in the RZR. Ben had suggested he use his pistol and save those shots for when he had a sure thing lined up; otherwise, he advised Ed to concentrate on driving. It wasn’t that Ben didn’t think he was capable. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Ben was impressed with Ed’s ability to keep it together this morning. He was sure this was Ed’s first real firefight. The man had probably experienced a lot of firsts today, now that he thought about it. Other than being a little trigger-happy, Ed had handled himself well. Ben had seen worse in the field from people with more training, training that went out the window when the bullets started flying. With some instruction, the man could be dangerous on his own, and Ben would be proud to suit up alongside him any day.

Ben was thankful for the rearview mirror, something he wouldn’t expect in a vehicle like this. It made it easy to keep tabs on the Hooligans coming up fast behind them.
